Energy Extractive Nexus Research

The project also facilitates a collaborative research initiative titled Energy Extractive Nexus, conducted together with lecturers from the Department of Politics and Government and researchers from the Research Centre for Politics and Government (PolGov), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM).

The global energy transition has significantly increased demand for electric vehicles and battery-based energy systems. This shift has, in turn, driven a growing need for nickel, a key component in electric vehicles and battery production. As one of the world’s largest nickel producers, Indonesia views this trend as a strategic opportunity to strengthen its role in the global nickel supply chain.

This research focuses on the governance of nickel mining in three major nickel-producing regions in Indonesia, Sorowako, Kolaka, and Morowali, while examining the processes through the lens of citizen participation and engagement.
