| As part of its commitment to strengthening research communication and public engagement, the SUSTAIN Project organized an offline training on popular academic writing in collaboration with The Conversation Indonesia (TCID) on 12 August 2025. The workshop was designed to equip researchers, academics, and project members with the skills needed to communicate research findings in ways that are accessible, engaging, and relevant to audiences beyond academia. The training introduced participants to the core principles of popular academic writing, from identifying newsworthy research questions and developing clear arguments to presenting evidence in language that is understandable to non-specialist readers. Through interactive presentations, writing exercises, and peer discussions, participants explored practical strategies for transforming academic work into articles that contribute to informed public conversations. Throughout the workshop, participants developed article ideas based on their own research and professional experiences. They received feedback from facilitators and fellow participants on how to refine their arguments, strengthen the structure of their writing, and improve readability while maintaining academic accuracy. This hands-on approach provided valuable experience in translating research findings into articles that can inform public debate and support evidence-based policymaking. Beyond technical writing skills, the workshop underscored the broader role of researchers in engaging with society. As issues such as resource governance, sustainable development, and the energy transition increasingly shape public and policy debates, the ability to communicate research effectively has become an essential part of academic practice. By encouraging participants to write for wider audiences, including policymakers, journalists, civil society organizations, and local communities, the training highlighted the importance of making research more accessible and socially relevant. The activity reflects SUSTAIN’s broader mission to strengthen citizen participation and inclusive resource governance through knowledge sharing and meaningful public engagement. Conducted in partnership with The Conversation Indonesia, the workshop represents an important step in bridging research, policy, and society. By fostering effective science communication, SUSTAIN continues to support researchers in ensuring that academic knowledge extends beyond scholarly publications and contributes to more informed public dialogue and evidence-informed policymaking. |
